Age Group: Young adult. Star rating: 5 stars. Version read: Kindle edition, 352 pages. Hey guys, welcome back! Today, I am going to be doing a spoiler-free review of the Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli. I was approved by Netgalley to read this book in advance in exchange for an honest review. This was the reason I joined Netgalley, someone posted about it on Twitter and I knew I had to try and be approved. Because this was the beginning of my account, I didn't think I would actually be approved for this highly anticipated book! I have a confession, I am one of the very few people on this planet who has not read Simon VS the Homosapians agenda and I am ashamed. I know I will love it just as much as I loved The Upside of Unrequited. This is a beautiful coming of age story about a 17 year old names Molly who is a part of a twin set. Molly has had a string of over 20 crushes but that's all they stay, crushes. Nothing more, ever. Although she has never had a concrete relationship, she also has never had to experience the heartbreak that is rejection. Molly's twin sister Cassie has had all sorts of flings with different girls and never fails to discuss them with Molly after but thanks to Molly, there is a new girl in Cassie's life and Cassie begins to experience a relationship like she never has before. Molly meets Cassie's best friend, he's cute, he's hipster and basically too cool for school and she also meets her coworker at her new job. He's sweet, he's nerdy and the two boys couldn't be more different. But, Molly is careful, she has always had to be careful but slowly, she finds herself opening up and letting loose. Can we just talk about how fantastic Becky Albertalli is as a writer?! I love her style of writing and I cannot wait to read Simon VS and any other work she is coming out with. This was such a cute and lovely idea for a novel. She really knows how to immerse the reader into the world and the story. This story is also riddled with diversity. There is so much of it and it was beautiful. I'll just mention a few to tease you with. Lots and lots of members from the LGBT community for example, gay, lesbian, pansexual, asexuality is mentioned. Jewish characters, Korean-American character, an overweight main character and mental health problems. How amazing is all of that? In one book! Molly was a very relatable character. I have marked two quotes from her narrative. I have decided not to put them here because I don't know how much of a spoiler those are but these quotes really made me think and I had to sit back and take a break just think, did I feel like Molly? There was a lot going on plot wise and it worked really well. There was a lot of little sub plots and I really enjoyed that. I was never bored with any of them. The relationships and the character development is really strong in this novel, the good and the not so good points. Lots of the characters go through hardships and we get to experience their journey with them and their actions never once felt forced or strained, they felt natural. I really encourage people to buy this book. It was incredible and I cannot wait to buy this book to add to my collection! Thanks for reading and don't forget to leave a comment! Much love x
